VANCOUVER CANUCKS INTERESTED IN NHL FREE AGENT FORWARD TYLER TOFFOLI: REPORT

Now that the Vancouver Canucks have closed the deal on their number one priority in Filip Hronek, they’ve now set their next sights on a top-six forward.

Donnie and Dhali — The Team’s Rick Dhaliwal delivered some news about former Canuck Tyler Toffoli on Monday morning:

“The Canucks do have interest in Tyler Toffoli if he hits the free agent market on July 1st. A little bit surprised at this bit of news,” Dhaliwal said. “He’s a smart player, [he’s got] 67 goals in the last two years, but he’s 32 years old, and he’s looking for term. The Canucks are out there looking for a top six winger. Is this plan B if they don’t get [Jake] Guentzel?”

This isn’t the first time Vancouver has shown interest in the Scarborough native. Under a different regime, the Canucks acquired him from the LA Kings in February of the 2019-20 season in exchange for forward Tim Schaller, prospect Tyler Madden, a 2020 second-round pick, and a conditional fourth-round pick.

Toffoli tallied six goals and 10 points in 10 games for the Canucks before the COVID-19 pandemic cut the season short. In the regular season, Toffoli spent 126 of his 147 minutes as a Canuck, on a line with Elias Pettersson.

During that bubble run, Toffoli sustained a lower-body injury in Game 2 in the qualifying round against the Minnesota Wild. The newly-acquired Canuck missed 21 days, only playing seven games and recording four points.

In his exit interviews after being eliminated in Game 7 against the Vegas Golden Knights, Toffoli expressed interest in a return to Vancouver.

“I want to stay in Vancouver, and that’s my number one priority right now.”

However, we all know how this one ended. Canucks General Manager at the time, Jim Benning, did not even offer the forward a contract extension, and Toffoli signed a four-year, $4.25M deal with the Montreal Canadiens.

Since then, Toffoli has played for four teams during that four-year contract and is looking to find a new home. Toffoli informed the Winnipeg Jets will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
