INSTANT REACTION: GEORGE SPRINGER HIT TWO THREE-RUN HOME RUNS IN BLUE JAYS’ 9-2 WIN OVER THE YANKEES
Ladies and gentlemen, the Toronto Blue Jays are so back.
On Thursday evening, the Blue Jays hosted the spiraling New York Yankees for the first of four games, defeating the American League East leaders 9-2.
After Ernie Clement made a nice catch to get José Berríos out of a runners on first and second scenario, the Blue Jays put up a five spot in the bottom of the first inning, with their first five batters reaching. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubled in the first run, before Justin Turner hit a single to score a run and put runners on the corners.
Up stepped George Springer, who hit a home run against the Red Sox in the Blue Jays’ latest win. Well, he did it again in the bottom of the first, hitting a three-run home run, his seventh of the season, to give Toronto a 5-0 lead.
Some dumb fans ran on the field in the top of the second, but Berríos got out of the second inning while giving up a walk. After Isiah Kiner-Falefa was hit by a pitch and Justin Turner walked, George Springer stepped up to the plate with two runners on, and once again, hit a three-run homer to make it 8-0.
The Yankees scored two on Berríos thanks to a Trent Grisham home run in the top of the fifth. However, after the ump called ball four strike two, Guerrero Jr. hit a home run, the highest launch angle on a home run in his career, making it 9-2.
Things worth mentioning…
Ross Atkins said that he believes the bats, and they went out and scored nine runs on Thursday. Over their past three games (not including Wednesday’s inning and a bit), the Jays have scored 24 runs. Are they back?
George Springer really needed to get going, and he did so in a big way by going 3-3 with six RBIs and two home runs. Hopefully, he can keep this up.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has now hit four home runs over his last six games, as well as four doubles in that span. This is the closest Guerrero Jr. has looked to his 2021-form, and coming into this game, he had a 154 wRC+ since the start of May. Re-sign him immediately.
José Berríos had a strong start, finishing with a line of 7 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 8 K while giving up his 18th home run of the season. Still, he has a solid 3.38 ERA for the season.
The bullpen had a solid game too. Zach Pop struck out two and walked a batter in an inning of work, while Bowden Francis allowed a hit and struck out a batter.
Up next: Blue Jays play the second of four at 7:07 PM ET tomorrow against the Yankees. Yusei Kikuchi will get the start against former Blue Jay, Marcus Stroman.
