ENGLAND VS. SLOVAKIA FINAL SCORE: EURO 2024 RESULT AS BELLINGHAM AND KANE SAVE THREE LIONS

Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane pulled England’s Euro 2024 campaign out of the fire with a dramatic turnaround against Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen.

Back at the ground where Portugal beat the Three Lions on penalties to knock them out of the 2006 World Cup, this similarly gifted England vintage were on course for a humiliation to rank alongside their Iceland debacle at Euro 2016 after Ivan Schranz gave Slovakia a deserved 25th-minute lead with his third goal of the competition.

Leading England for the 99th time, Gareth Southgate looked sure to be heading out of a job deep into stoppage time at the Veltins Arena. Phil Foden had a goal chalked off for offside, Kane missed a sitter and Declan Rice hit the post, but much of the their play was horribly listless once more.

Then, after throwing Ivan Toney on as an extra striker, Southgate saw Kyle Walker launch a long-throw that Marc Guehi flicked on and Real Madrid star Bellingham converted with a fantastic overhead kick.

Slovakia were still scrambled as extra time got underway and, when fellow substitute Eberechi Eze sliced a shot, Toney nodded across goal for Kane to capitalise and join Bellingham on two goals for the tournament.

Southgate replaced both goalscorers at halftime in extra time and England dropped perilously deep, as they did after taking group-stage leads against Serbia and Denmark, a perplexing move given Slovakia had made defensive substitution of their own and failed to offer much threat since Schranz’s third goal of Euro 2024.

Switzerland are up next for a Dusseldorf quarterfinal, having produced performances of composure and coherence far beyond anything England have mustered in Germany. No team worth their salt will fear this England, but they will fear the idea of these England players pulling something together out of the shambles. Thanks to Bellingham and Kane, two of many below-par superstars, they live to fight another day.

Well, they were largely awful for a longer period of time than usual. But Bellingham produced a moment of magic in injury time and Kane does what he does having done very little of it in the preceding 90 minutes. It's Switzerland in Dusseldorf for the fourth quarterfinal of the Southgate era next Saturday. They've rarely looked so shambolic during his tenure but they get to go again. Thanks for joining us.

England are 15 minutes away but haven't really kicked on from going 2-1 ahead.  Instead they've sat back and invited pressure as they did when they led against Serbia and Denmark.

Bellingham is one of several hugely talented players to have disappointed for the Three Lions at this tournament but he's pulled it out of the fire. What have they got in extra time? 86 mins: Foden overhits it, Dubravka punches clear. Now Palmer with one of those crosses Skriniar will head all day. England have not scored since the 18th minute of their second match.

85 mins: Eze gets his dancing feet going, Suslov fouls Bellingham. Crossing position and they need to make it count.

84 mins: Mainoo, who has been fine within this casserole of nonsense, makes way for Eze.

81 mins: Rice hits the post! Fierce drive from the edge of the box, back off the inside of the post. Kane punts the rebound over.

79 mins: Back to rubbish from the flanks as Bellingham slices one into Dubravka's gloves. Eberechi Eze is about to come on. It's his 26th birthday. Many happy returns!

78 mins: Ohhhh Harry Kane!!! This Foden free-kick is a beauty, the captain rises and plants a header wide. He simply has to score that.

76 mins: Into the final quarter of an hour. England are still yet to really make Martin Dubravka do anything. 

73 mins: Bellingham twists and turns down the left channel. He crosses into the middle but it's another of those floaty balls for Skriniar to devour.

70 mins: Kane works the ball over the Palmer, who finds Bellingham, with a cute pass but the Real Madrid man takes a tumble too easily.

69 mins: Palmer into the action. Nice ball from the right that Foden attacks and Skriniar concedes the corner. Foden's delivery does not beat the first man. Now the Manchester City man overhits his ball to the far post. The lack of quality from very good players has been something to witness.

66 mins: Off comes Trippier, on comes Palmer, Saka goes to left-back because Southgate didn't pick any. Which makes this, weirdly, probably a good decision in the dire circumstances.

64 mins: Palmer coming on as the Slovakia fans mock their England counterparts with an Iceland thunderclap. Bukayo Saka is going to left-back. Oh, hang on, Trippier is back on the field.

62 mins: Bellingham looks over the top for Foden. Dubravka mops up. It's all just a bit desperate from England. They win the ball back, Pekarik clatters into Trippier. Again the ball into the box goes to Dubravka.

60 mins: Mainoo hacked down. Bizarrely Kucka doesn't get a second yellow. Has Meler lost his cards? This is in a good position. Foden clatters into the wall.

55 mins: OH MY GOOD GRIEF, WHAT ARE ENGLAND DOING?!?!?! Walker takes a quick free-kick to Stones, who appears to be pondering the meaning of life. Strelec is onto it and shoots for an unguarded net form halfway. It's just wide.

53 mins: Horrible looping deflection from a Kane shot and Dubravka is relieved to see it spin wide. From the resulting corner, he has to punch Trippier's corner clear from under his crossbar.

51 mins: NO GOAL! Foden strayed into an offside position getting onto the end of Trippier's cutback. He just didn't need to be. Lovely England move too.

50 mins: Phil Foden has the ball in the net for England but that will be checked...

Kickoff: Second half

Back underway, no changes for either side. No, not for England either.

Halftime

England huffed and puffed towards the end of that half but it's still not anywhere near good enough for players of this calibre, who look variously tired, clueless and consumed by nerves. This really does feel like a tournament exit from the bad old days before Gareth Southgate, who looks complicit in crafting his downfall at this point. Slovakia 45 minutes away from a sensation.

45+4 mins: That one was cleared but Rice wins another corner. Kane pulls away to hit a volley that he shanks horribly.

45+2 mins: Saka wins a free-kick on the right. Nice position for Foden's left foot. Punched away by Dubravka. Flick by Rice but Kane is offside. England keep it alive, Mainoo cuts inside and his shot is deflected wide.

45+1 mins: This is the first of three added minutes. Skriniar barrels out of defence and brings down Bellingham to be the latest man into the book.

42 mins: Foden shimmies in field. He looks to launch a ball to Trippier darting through but it's overhit. 

40 mins: Southgate calls over Foden and Stones for a conflab. "What does Pep do in these situations, lads?" (I jest)

39 mins: Foden's dangerous delivery is headed clear. Rice sends it back in. Dubravka comes and gets some of the ball and a decent amount of Bellingham and Vavro to book. There'll be a stoppage.

38 mins: Duda fouls Bellingham and this is a handy crossing position on the left. Foden over it.

35 mins: Lovely in-swinger from Trippier and Vavro makes an excellent aerial challenge with Kane poised to convert. Trippier tries again but Meler blows up for a negligible infringement from Guehi.

34 mins: In quick succession Rice and Kane each look as if they've slipped into Hollywood ball mode. That might be down to the pitch or the game situation but it's far from ideal. Bellingham drives at the Slovakia defence and wins a corner.

32 mins: Better from England as Saka gets past his man. Again the final ball is lacking, though.

28 mins: To compound matters for Southgate's side, Guehi appeared to jar his shoulder when coming off second-best in an aerial challenge with Kucka in the build-up to that goal. He's carrying on for now.

25 mins: GGGOOOOOAAAAALLLLL!!!!!! Ivan Schranz!!!!

Slovakia lead, Schranz has his third goal of Euro 2024 and England are behind for the first time in the tournament. Strelec has too much time to pick out the in-form right winger, who slots beyond Pickford.

24 mins: Varvo doesn't get all of Saka's cross as he tries to clear. Mainoo has a bash on the volley from outside the box. It's over but not terrible.

23 mins: Rice wins back possession high up, Bellingham barrels into the box and looks for Foden. The Manchester City man is down from a nudge by Duda but that's not enough for a penalty. Now a cross to Kane and his header is deflected behind.

17 mins: Bellingham gets a bit of the ball but hacks down Harslin. The third England player into the book. Dicey stuff.

15 mins: Kucka was booked after Stones cleared that free-kick. He now brings down Foden, with probably a worse foul than any of the faintly absurd bookings so far and it's just a foul, mercifully. Umut Meler is having himself a day out.

12 mins: Huge chance for Slovakia! Walker caught ball-watching and Haraslin is round the outside. He's in on goal but Guehi makes a fine challenge before Trippier hacks away from the goalmouth. Then Bellingham, fouls Duda and Slovakia can aim another ball into the box.

11 mins: Walker overhits a cross. England keep the attack alive. Mainoo is giving them angles they haven't had previously. Walker again, elects not to cross and Rice chips out of a goal kick.

10 mins: Bellingham with room to stretch his legs. The Slovakia defence are drawn across, leaving Trippier free. The full-back shapes to shoot on his right foot and puts it into orbit.

8 mins: Slovakia's enterprising start continues. Haraslin has a shot blocked from Strelec's knockdown. The follow-up is flashed across goal from the right.

7 mins: Lovely trickery from Saka leaves Hankco having far less fun inside his own half. He cuts back to Bellingham, who dallies on the ball, but Mainoo and Saka exchange nicely before Slovakia scramble away. From the second ball, Mainoo fouls Duda and becomes the second England player into the book. Referee Meler seemingly keen to make a name for himself.

5 mins: Walker caught up the field. Haraslin roves in from the flak, plays in the under-lapping Hancko. The left-back shoots just wide of the far post. Pickford probably had that covered but problems for England early on here.

4 mins: Nice delivery from the right but Kucka can't make a clean contact and is offside in any case.

3 mins: Trippier caught on the ball and sells Guehi short. The Crystal Palace man brings down Strelec and is booked. If England make the quarterfinals, arguably their most impressive performer so far will be suspended.

2 mins: Pickford goes long. He picks out Bellingham, whose header down can't reach Kane. The Real Madrid man will like the amount of room he was granted there, though.

Off we go. England clatter the ball straight to Dubravka in the Slovakia goal.

5 mins before kickoff: Here come the teams. Are the real England about to stand up? Or is what we've seen so far all this talented team have as a cockeyed collective? If so, are Slovakia on the brink of one of the great Euros upsets? We'll find out over the next couple of hours.

20 mins before kickoff: This is Gareth Southgate's 99th match in charge of England. John Stones and Kyle Walker are the only survivors from that 2-0 win over Malta in 2016. By any reasonable measure, Southgate is the most successful England manager since 1966 World Cup-winning coach Sir Alf Ramsey. But if things go awry in Gelsenkirchen this evening, it's impossible to see him reaching three figures.

40 mins before kickoff: Even though Shaw could be the answer to a fair few problems (the fact the Manchester United left-back hasn't played since February is something of a problem in itself), this feels like the last chance for Southgate's lopsided England formation to get some fluency. Having the likes of Saka, Bellingham and Foden buzzing around near the box as Kane drops deep sounds like a lovely equation, but they've been stilted and narrow so far. 

Maddening as it might be after months of supposedly careful preparation, teams working things out on the fly during international tournaments is nothing new. But you sense England really things to click here, building on those suggestions of green shoots during the second half against Slovenia. Three Lions fans will obviously take any win but stumbling through would do nothing for confidence levels ahead of a potential quarterfinal against Switzerland.

1 hour before kickoff: Slovakia will match up to England's flexible 4-3-3 shape, with David Strelec preferred to Robert Bozenik at centre-forward once again.

1 hr 8 mins before kickoff: The England team is in and it's as expected, with Mainoo in for Gallagher. Kieran Trippier continues at left-back after overcoming concerns with a calf injury. Luke Shaw is among the substitutes.

1 hr 20 mins before kickoff: The confirmed team news will be with us soon, giving those who have spent the past few days pushing salt shakers around England's dining tables and office spaces the chance to get properly angry. Kobbie Mainoo's first competitive senior start in place of Conor Gallagher is expected to be Southgate's only change after the Manchester United teenager gave England a touch more fluidity in midfield after halftime against Slovenia. That quality remains absent across a talent-stacked forward line, where Bukayo Saka is expected to see off the clamour for Cole Palmer and Phil Foden will resume duties nominally from the left flank after flying home for the birth of his third child. Captain Harry Kane and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham are England's only goalscorers at the tournament so far but could very much do with a performance befitting of their status.

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: So welcome to The Easy Side of the Draw (tm). Say what you like about Gareth Southgate's tactics but the England boss does seem to have a sixth sense when it comes to locating the most agreeable path through tournaments. Of course, this is only really the easy side of the draw if you disregard Switzerland's authoritative dismemberment of Italy yesterday — a level of performance the Three Lions have go nowhere near so far. The last time England met Slovakia in this competition was eight years ago, when a 0-0 group stage draw opened up the easier side of that draw. Then Iceland had other ideas. If we're being realistic about England's form in Germany thus far, then averting embarrassment has to be the first target.

2 hours before kickoff: England have faced questions, criticisms, strong words and empty beer cups. They have been heralded as favourites and written off as no-hopers. They have failed to impress, yet eased into the knockout phase without losing a game. Where will their story go from here?

England's first-choice left-back Luke Shaw, who had been sidelined with a hamstring problem, made himself available for Sunday's game and is back among the substitutes.
