MONTREAL CANADIENS ADD ALEXANDRE BURROWS AND LAURI KORPIKOSKI TO PLAYER DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

The Montreal Canadiens have announced that they’ve added Alexandre Burrows and Lauri Korpikoski to their player development department.

Burrows has been working with the Canadiens organization since 2018, but will see his role change to a player development consultant. Prior to that, Burrows has served as an assistant coach for the Canadiens’ minor league affiliate, the Laval Rocket, from 2018 to 2021, where he was then promoted to an assistant coach position on the Habs when they fired Claude Julien and hired Dominique Ducharme on February 24th. He held that role for the rest of that season and the next three full seasons until his position change now.

At the time of publishing, the Canadiens haven’t announced a replacement for Burrows replacement on the bench.

Burrows also spent 13 seasons in the league as a winger for both the Vancouver Canucks and the Ottawa Senators. In 913 regular season games, he accumulated 205 goals, 204 assists, and 409 points, and in 85 playoff games, he had 19 goals, 20 assists and 39 points, never winning the Stanley Cup, but coming one game short of doing so with the Canucks in 2011.

Korpikoski is a new addition to the organization, and will also serve in a player development role, although his responsibilities will primarily be based in Europe as a development coach. He has previously not held any coaching positions of note in his career.

However, Korpikoski did spend 10 seasons in the NHL as a winger for the New York Rangers, Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes, Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars and Columbus Blue Jackets. In 609 regular seasons games, he accumulated 86 goals, 115 assists and 201 points, and in 30 playoff games, he had 2 goals, 3 assists and 5 points.

The Canadiens haven’t had a busy offseason so far, with their only moves of note being the extension given to Juraj Slafkovsky and trading Johnathan Kovacevic to the New Jersey Devils. They currently have just over $10 million in cap space, with their only remaining restricted free agents being Arber Xhekaj and Justin Barron.
