FIVE OF SEVEN RFAS ISSUED QUALIFYING OFFERS BY EDMONTON OILERS, CARTER SAVOIE AND RYAN FANTI TO BECOME UFAS
The deadline for teams to issue qualifying offers to their impending restricted free agents is Sunday at 5:00 p.m. ET. Those who are qualified are signed to a new contract for the following season and those who aren’t become unrestricted free agents on July 1.
The Edmonton Oilers announced on Sunday morning that they’ve issued qualifying offers to five of their seven impending RFAs.
Per the Oilers’ official press release… Defencemen Philip Broberg and Noel Hoefenmayer have received qualifying offers from the team, as have forwards James Hamblin, Dylan Holloway and Raphael Lavoie. The team did not issue qualifying offers to forward Carter Savoie and goaltender Ryan Fanti.
Philip Broberg was the first player selected in the Ken Holland era at eighth overall in the 2019 NHL Draft. He spent two seasons in Sweden before coming overseas to join the Bakersfield Condors in 2021-22. The three years of his entry-level contract were spent largely as an NHL-AHL tweener but Broberg took a major step forward for the Oilers during the playoffs in 2024. He isn’t yet eligible to go to salary arbitration so the Oilers will be able to bring Broberg back on an inexpensive contract.
Dylan Holloway was Edmonton’s first-round selection in the 2020 NHL Draft and has also reached the end of his entry-level contract. He’s battled injuries throughout the past few seasons but showed his upside as a physical goal-scorer in the latter part of the 2023-24 season and throughout the playoffs. Like with Broberg, Holloway doesn’t have the ability to go to salary arbitration this summer.
Raphael Lavoie finished his entry-level contract last summer and accepted the Oilers’ qualifying offer, giving him a cap hit of $874,125. The Oilers were pressed right against the cap ceiling to start the season and the second-round pick from the 2019 NHL Draft wound up on waivers in favour of others on league-minimum contracts. He scored 28 goals and 50 points over 66 games for the Condors and was held off the scoresheet in seven games with the Oilers.
James Hamblin signed a minor-league deal with the Condors as an undrafted free agent and earned a contract with the Oilers in March of 2022. He made his NHL debut in 2022-23 and scored two goals and three points over 31 games for the Oilers in 2023-24.
Noel Hoefenmayer was selected by the Arizona Coyotes in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Draft but never signed an entry-level contract with the club. He spent three seasons in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization on a minor-league deal and inked his first NHL contract with the Oilers last summer. Over 47 games with the Condors in 2023-24, Hoefenmayer scored seven goals and 18 points.
Carter Savoie was Edmonton’s fourth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. A native of St. Albert, Savoie is well-known for scoring 53 goals in 54 games in the AJHL in 2019-20, one of the best statistical seasons in the league’s history. He had two successful seasons with the University of Denver and then scored 18 goals and 33 points over 107 games in the AHL between 2022-23 and 2023-24.
Ryan Fanti signed with the Oilers as an undrafted free agent after two seasons with the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He spent most of his two entry-level contract years with the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL and posted an .884 save percentage over eight games with the Condors.
